The History of Divers Cove: From Sand Extraction to Wild Swimming Haven

What is the history of Divers Cove in Surrey?

If you’re one of our members, or you’ve visited Divers Cove for a wild swim before, chances are that you’ve seen the clear turquoise waters we’re known for on a bright, sunny day.

Whilst bright blue waters aren’t usually something you’d associate with wild swimming in the UK, our waters are stunning and clear due to the lake’s natural biodiversity.

But what’s the history of Divers Cove, and how did it change to become the open water swimming lake that we know and love today? Our 7.3-acre reservoir was actually once a sand extraction site, which is why it has a lovely sandy bottom perfect for open water swimming now.

How did Divers Cove transform from a sand extraction site?

Sand extraction, a process for construction and land reclamation, often leaves behind large, water-filled pits.

Once the former industrial site was no longer needed in Godstone for sand extraction, this former sand quarry was then transformed into our sparkling open water swimming lake.

A Spot for Nature

Now that Divers Cove is an outdoor swimming lake, it has become a thriving habitat for local wildlife. From our spring ducklings to the carp in the water, our lake is a perfect example of how former industrial sites can be repurposed to benefit both people and nature.

So, next time you’re at The Cove for a wild swim, be sure to keep an eye out for the animals and lovely flora and fauna - after all, being surrounded by nature is one of the best things about wild swimming!

How has Divers Cove evolved over the years?

Since starting out as a sand extraction site, Divers Cove has evolved to become an open water swimming lake, with members travelling from various spots in Surrey and even London to come and visit.

Whilst we started out just offering wild swimming, we’ve since evolved to have a cafe, heated changing rooms and our lakeside wooden sauna pods which are a massive hit with members both old and new.

Wild Swimming at Divers Cove

Looking for an open water swimming spot near you? Whether you’re a seasoned wild swimmer, or you’re just starting out, Divers Cove is the perfect place to take a dip in natural waters and fully immerse yourself in nature

Discover the (not so) hidden gem of Surrey’s wild swimming scene at Divers Cove, where our crystal-clear waters are open for outdoor swimming all year-round. In summer, our most popular season, swimmers can expect water temperatures exceeding 20C, perfect for cooling off after long days at work.

For the experienced open water swimmer with a Gold or Silver membership, we’re open throughout the winter season, ideal for swimmers keen to try cold water exposure. From a boosted immune system, to the natural endorphins produced, cold water exposure offers a wide range of benefits - which is why it’s gained popularity in recent years.

The safety and comfort of our swimmers are of the utmost importance to us, with our open water trained lifeguards overseeing every session. After your invigorating swim, retreat to the luxury of heated changing rooms, which are especially ideal for the cooler months.

Or, if you’re new to wild swimming, dive into the experience with our Introduction to Open Water Swimming course, designed to build your confidence and skills in the water.

Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or a curious beginner, Divers Cove offers an unparalleled wild swimming experience in the heart of Surrey. Come and immerse yourself in our refreshing waters to see the various mental and physical health benefits offered.

Sauna Sessions at Divers Cove

For those looking to make their swim session even better, or those who prefer the warmth, then our handcrafted wooden sauna pods are the place to be.

Our sauna pods are nestled on the picturesque shores of our lake, so you can enjoy the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, ideal for both adventure seekers and those seeking a wellness experience alike.

As our sauna sessions include cold dips in our lake, many visitors tend to try contrast therapy - stepping out of our warm, cosy sauna pods to plunge into the cool waters of our lake. This combination of heat exposure and cold immersion can boost your immune system, improve circulation and help you to feel rejuvenated.

So, if you’re looking to sweat out toxins and soothe your tired muscles, try our sauna pods on your next visit. Follow this with a brisk swim in our lake, and you’ll enjoy a natural high that energises your body and mind. We think that is the perfect way to end a busy week, whether you’re a local Surrey resident, or you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Divers Cove in 2024: What We Offer

Since our origins as a formed sand extraction site, we’ve evolved into a popular Surrey swimming lake, offering a unique blend of wellness and adventure. Though our classic wild swimming remains at the core of our offering, we now also have our lakeside wooden sauna pods, as well as other amenities such as our heated changing rooms and cafe. So, after your wild swim, you can refuel with our delicious homemade baked goods, hot and cold drinks and, on selected days, artisan pizzas.

Beyond open water swimming, we’ve also expanded our offering to include courses such as our Wim Hof Fundamentals Course, for those looking to learn more about the Wim Hof Method of cold water exposure, and our Introduction to Open Water Swimming Course, ideal for those looking to take their wild swimming skills to the next level.
