5 Ways To Remain Fit During Winter

As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, the temptation of cosy nights in and delicious, warming meals can easily disrupt your fitness routines - especially with the indulgent holiday season thrown into the mix.

Maintaining an active lifestyle throughout the winter can be beneficial for both your physical and mental well-being.

Whilst the grim weather conditions may present some challenges, there are loads of engaging and practical ways to keep your body moving during this time of the year. Whether it’s a winter sport or an individual activity, there are multiple options that are worth checking out.

Winter Swimming

Feeling the goosebumps just thinking about winter cold water swimming? We feel you. But here's the cool part (pun intended!) -  research has shown that cold water has tremendous mental and physical benefits.

When cold water swimming, you're boosting your immune system, giving your heart a happy workout, and reducing your stress levels. Plus, thanks to the cold water exposure, it’s also like a spa day for your muscles, hair and skin. You might also notice better sleep patterns and improved mood - all from taking a dip in the cold!

If you’re thinking of trying winter swimming this year, we’d recommend starting wild swimming during the summer, and carrying on through autumn and winter to acclimatise. Our winter swimming is open to our Gold and Silver members.

It's the perfect way to keep your swim game strong all year round and discover the amazing benefits of cold water swimming.

Walking

Alongside winter swimming, there are also a number of other activities that can help you to remain fit during the winter. After all, you don’t want to let the cooler temperatures keep you indoors all season! Embracing winter walks can be both invigorating and beneficial for your health. The crisp air and beautiful scenery offer a refreshing change from sitting indoors.

Walking in colder weather actually burns more calories as your body works harder to maintain its temperature. Just remember to dress appropriately in layers, wear comfortable shoes with good traction, and stay visible if you're out during the earlier evenings or overcast days.

A regular walking routine can help maintain your fitness levels, boost your immune system, and boost your mood during the long winter months. Whether it's a brisk lunchtime walk or a leisurely weekend stroll in a local park, keeping active outdoors can be a great way to combat the winter blues and stay fit.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a quintessential winter activity that combines fun with fitness. Whether you're a graceful glider or a wobbly beginner, hitting the rink provides an excellent full-body workout, much like open water swimming

It engages your core, improves balance and coordination, and strengthens leg muscles.

Don't worry if you're not a pro – even maintaining your balance on the ice burns calories and improves your overall fitness.

Indoor Fitness

For days when the weather outside is frightful, the gym can be quite delightful! Indoor gyms provide a consistent, comfortable environment for maintaining your fitness routine throughout winter.

From cardio machines that simulate outdoor activities to strength training equipment and group classes, gyms offer diverse options to keep your workouts interesting.

The controlled temperature allows you to exercise in lightweight clothing, and you don't have to worry about icy patches or early sunsets.

However, as an open water swimming lake, we’re big advocates for spending time in nature, so we’d always recommend combining visits to the gym with outdoor exercise so that you can reap the benefits of fresh air and time outdoors.

Online Fitness Classes

Gym not your scene? Boost your fitness routine with online classes that you can enjoy from the comfort of your living room. As winter weather makes venturing outdoors less appealing, virtual workouts offer a convenient and effective way to stay in shape.

From high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to yoga, dance cardio to strength training, there's an online class for every preference and fitness level. Many platforms offer live sessions, bringing the energy and motivation of group classes right to your screen. All you need is a bit of space, some basic equipment (often just a mat and your body weight), and an internet connection.

Online classes provide flexibility in scheduling, eliminate commute time, and allow you to explore various workout styles without leaving home.

How to remain motivated and accountable

Maintaining motivation and consistency can be a challenge during the winter, but there are several strategies you can employ to stay on track with your fitness goals.

  1. Find an Exercise Buddy or Group

Having the support of a workout partner or joining a fitness community, whether in person or virtually, can provide the accountability you need to stay motivated through the colder months. Our friendly group of members often enjoy a post-swim chat on the shores of our lake, with many opting for year-round swimming sessions.

  1. Set Achievable Goals

Break down your fitness objectives into smaller, measurable steps that you can celebrate along the way. This can help keep you focused and engaged, even on the days when the weather or your energy levels may not be cooperating.

  1. Incorporate Variety

Mix up your routine by trying new activities, experimenting with different workout formats, or exploring different locations. This can help prevent boredom and keep your body and mind challenged. This might involve combining gym sessions with weekend winter swims, to allow for a mix of indoor and outdoor exercise.

  1. Celebrate Small Victories

Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Recognise the effort you're putting in and the positive impact it's having on your overall health and well-being.

  1. Embracing the Winter Wellness Mindset

Ultimately, the key to staying active and healthy during the winter months is to approach the season with a positive and adaptable mindset. Embrace the unique challenges and opportunities that the colder weather presents, and find joy in the process of keeping your body and mind engaged and thriving, no matter the conditions outside.

By incorporating a variety of winter-friendly activities and prioritising safety and self-care, you can not only maintain your fitness routine but also improve your overall well-being and resilience throughout the winter season.
